Personal Squat Lore:
Squats are abhumans that once held a similar position (but vastly weaker and more centralized) to the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Adeptus Ministorum in that they owned their own planets and had their own culture and law that was integrated into the Imperium. Their worlds were known as part of the Core, and the higher gravity caused the biologic and genetic divergence that led to their smaller sizes. Grumgi and Grimnir, whom were influential living Squats that were deified, were once known as the Ancestor Gods and were syncretized into saints of the Imperial Creed. They are still referred to as the Ancestor Gods, but the ancestor gods include the Emperor, His aspect as the Omnissiah, and the Machine God. Squats, before their worlds' destruction by the Tyranid swarm, held a divergence of archaeotech from the rest the Imperium before reunification during the Great Crusade. Their understanding became a separate form of the rote rituals that the Adeptus Mechanicus reveres. Some particularly zealous techpriests might consider Squat technology as heretical in the eyes of the Machine God. They are human designs from old STCs, however.
This might not be in-line with old 1E lore but I'm kind of freeballing here. I just want space dwarves.
